Have you heard of Lidar?

It’s “Light Detection And Ranging,” which means equip­ment for detect­ing and mea­sur­ing dis­tances using light.

The way you put it, one can imag­ine sev­er­al appli­ca­tions. In the civil­ian sec­tor, we’ve heard about these autonomous vehi­cles that are sup­posed to be dri­ving us soon. 

Tests are under­way in San Francisco, for exam­ple; it’s not uncom­mon to encounter these cars equipped with sen­sors, cam­eras, and GPS.
