Contribution and use of LEDs in lighting

What are the different types of LED lighting? Let’s highlight their benefits and practical applications.

What is LED Lighting?

LED, acronym for Light Emitting Diode, is an energy-efficient lighting technology using physical properties of semiconductors to produce light. Compared to traditional light bulbs, LEDs convert electricity into light more efficiently, resulting in reduced energy consumption. This last property earned its inventors, all three Japanese, the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014.

Today, LEDs give light ranging from warm white to cool white, other LEDs have specific colors, red, green and blue. . Finally, in the same small box, we generally find combinations of of the two white temperatures or of the three fundamental colors. The three colors and white are commonly found in the same box to give more shades including pastels. Various variators are offered on the market to exploit all these nuances.

Description of the physical principle of LEDs
The voltage difference between two semiconductors, one of which has electron holes, creates light energy.

These are two semiconductors, one of which is composed of Ga (Gallium), P (Phosphorus) and As (Arsenic). When a direct current is applied across a semiconductor p‑n junction, electrons combine with positive holes at the light junction, emitting light of a certain frequency that corresponds to the energy input. What are the main advantages of LEDs

  • Energy Efficiency: LEDs consume less energy while maintaining equivalent brightness, thereby reducing electricity consumption and associated costs.
  • Exceptional Durability: With an extended lifespan, LEDs require fewer replacements, helping to reduce electronic waste. In particular, successive switching on and off, however rapid they may be, does not affect their durability. Finally, like electronic components, they are easily recyclable.
  • Creative Versatility: Available in a variety of forms, from traditional bulbs to flexible strips, LEDs integrate creatively into different environments.

What are the uses of LED lighting?

1° Residential LED lighting

Create a warm and personalized atmosphere in each room of your home thanks to LED strips with adjustable colors and intensity.

The indirect light of LED strips allows you to highlight the contours of a room, an object of art, a false ceiling… Whether in plain white or in variable color temperature (from warm white to cold white), or even in colors, you have a wide range of installations. You can change the ambiance of your rooms thanks to 2 kinds of dimmers, recessed or remote-controlled. Note that the LED tapes must be placed on metal surfaces.

Our range of profiles generally covers all needs, thanks to exhaustive extrusion formats aluminum.

2° Commercial LED lighting

Opt for an efficient and economical solution in shops, offices and public spaces and combine visibility and reduction of energy costs.

So in this project, the ceiling spotlights provide effective light in this store dedicated to beautiful glasses and good eyesight. Above and inside the window, adjustable 28W rectangular spotlights highlight the foreground for passers-by. The glasses rest on backlit plates thanks to which shapes and colors appear, without shadow. The two rows of round recessed ceiling lights of 15W, aligned throughout the store, give ambient light thanks to their wide beam.

3° Exterior LED lighting

Combine aesthetics and functionality with LED outdoor lighting, improving the visibility and safety of outdoor spaces.

The Different Types of LED Lighting from FlexLedLight

1° LED Strips and Neon Lights

LED strips offer a versatile solution for lighting and decorating various spaces. Thanks to technologies such as COB (Chip on Board) and < a href=“https://flexledlight.fr/produit/strip-120-ledm-rgb/”>RGB (Red, Green, Blue), these strips allow extensive customization of color and light intensity. They are installed in aluminum profiles. In silicone sheaths, they take on the appearance of neon lights. Associated with micro-controllers, they can be controlled individually. Thus, RGB LEDs vary over time in all the colors of the spectrum and allow light animations. The DMX protocol, used in concerts and shows, is the most widespread, followed by DALI, best known in France for home automation.

Advantage: Ideal for creating dynamic atmospheres in spaces such as lounges, restaurants or events.

2° LED window spotlights

The LED window spotlights are characterized by their mini size and the possibility of directing them using suitable supports. The diameters measure from 12mm to 30mm, the lengths are around 30mm. Some spots in our range are mounted on a ball joint and are magnetized. The supports available are cylindrical rods up to 1.50m high and 14mm in diameter, flat rails and even flexible rails capable of following the shape of a display or niche. Depending on the models , white, black or gray color finishes can be ordered as an option.

3° LED Projectors

For architectural lighting, we we created spots such as this 4‑color square spot (in 2 powers) as well as wall-washers. These come in the form of bars generally 1m long. The LEDs that make them up can be white or colored. They can be controlled by DMX most of the time.

4° Urban lighting and other uses of LEDs

Thanks to their low consumption, LEDs are increasingly used in urban lighting. Combined with sensors and intelligent systems, their intensity can vary and contribute to energy savings, well beyond old metal-hydride lighting. With the need for significant lighting power, stadiums and airports are also switching to LED.

Finally, car headlights, as well as all interior lighting in passenger compartments, boat interiors systematically use LEDs for their strength and low consumption.
